Methadone Addiction
According to the DEA, German scientists
synthesized methadone during World War II because of a shortage of
morphine. Although chemically unlike morphine or heroin, methadone produces
many of the same effects. Introduced into the United States in 1947 as an
analgesic (Dolophinel), it is primarily used today for the treatment of
narcotic addiction.
Ironically, methadone used to control narcotic
addiction is frequently encountered on the illicit market and has been
associated with a number of overdose deaths.
Chronic use of methadone
results in the development of tolerance and dependence. The withdrawal symptoms
are more severe than for heroin or other opiates and are also longer-lasting.
Methadone withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to: sneezing,
yawning, tearing of eyes, runny nose, excessive perspiration, fever, dilated
pupils, abdominal cramps, nausea, body aches, tremors and irritability.

Methadone Overdoses
While the initial intention by well-meaning people would be for
these addicts to wean down off the drug, it is highly addictive and tolerance
builds rather quickly so the length of time and amount taken both usually
increase.
Methadone is actually a very deadly drug. In fact, a recent
study showed that methadone was responsible for 40% of the drug overdose deaths
in one state, and has also become the #1 drug overdose killer in several other
states as well.
Not only is replacing one drug with another not an
effective way to help people live drug-free, but information posted on
HARMD.org claims that In
2004 close to 4000 people died from methadone. In 2005 Methadone was implicated
in over 4700 deaths. That does not include auto accidents caused by those
driving under the influence of methadone. The numbers of
methadone-related deaths are increasing each year.

why someone became addicted to methadone, we can help find permanent solutions
